      2011 CLUB HIGHLIGHTS!

CLUB BUS TRIP - MARYLAND GAME
- Our Gettysburg Club had 160 members, family, and friends travel to the game with the Maryland Terrapins at FED-EX Field on 11/12. Two buses left the Knights of Columbus at 3:00pm on that day, taking 84 passengers while the remaining members drove directly to the stadium. Everyone enjoyed tailgating in the parking areas and we also came away with a solid win 45-21. On this night one of the highlights of the event was the halftime show which featured the Notre Dame Band saluting our military men and women. They included the Maryland Band also. It was a spectacular show!

8TH ANNUAL FATHER CORBY MASS - On June 25th members and friends gathered near the Father Corby statue for the celebration of the 8th annual Corby Battlefield Mass. Father Mike Reid celebrated the mass for the 60+ people in attendance. John Murphy played his usual roles in the event - historian, leader of the singing, and playing of TAPS to end the ceremony.  John Delaney, our honored guest from Notre Dame, planted small replicas of the U. S. Flag and the flag of the Irish Brigade. Members of the Irish Brigade Honor Guard were present once again - they have been there every year. After the mass 58 people drove to the faculty dining room at Gettysburg College where the annual UND Luncheon was held. Rick Staub, President of ND Gettysburg, handed out a number of awards, including the 2011 Corby Award to Dan Lyons. BRIAN KELLY COMES TO TOWN!  Coach Kelly fulfilled the promise made to our club when we were named Outstanding Club at the Senate Conference in 2010. He attended our club luncheon at the Cross Keys Inn and Conference Center on Friday, May 20th. The atmosphere was electric throughout the event and every member who attended had the opportunity to meet coach and have their picture taken prior to lunch. During his speech Coach talked about how proud he was of the alumni clubs and what they do for their communities across the USA. He also focused on the football program and said he intends to bring a National Championship the next time he visits. Dolly Duffy,  Executive Director of the NDAA, also attended along with Beth Rex, Director of Football Administration. John Murphy presented Coach Kelly with a check from the club for $2,000 for the "Kelly Cares" Foundation. It was a VERY SPECIAL DAY for our club.     Coach Kelly Luncheon

SPIRITUAL PROGRAM 2011 - Alan Perry conducted another great Spiritual Program in 2011. It included: Lenten Retreat and Mass on April 9 at Gettysburg College, Annual Father Corby Battlefield Mass on June 25, Student Send-off Mass on August 13 at Annunciation BVM Parish, and the Advent Mass on December 10.

Pictured at the left is Club Chaplain Father Mike Reid during the Lenten Mass on April 9. The morning began at Weidensall Hall on the campus of Gettysburg College where Father Jonathan Sawicki provided an excellent lecture on upcoming changes in the liturgy. From there everyone went to Mercy Chapel in St. Francis Xavier parish for Mass and then to the PIKE Restaurant for our Lenten Luncheon. The April Board Meeting followed the lunch. Lenten Mass and Lunch

HESBURGH LECTURE COMPLETES ON APRIL 30 -The club's busy month of April completed with Dr. Dominic Vachon presenting his lecture entitled "What Difference Does Caring Make? The Uses and Misuses of Caring Science in Business, Healthcare, and Ministry" in Mara Auditorium at Masters Hall on the campus of Gettysburg College. There were forty (40) attendees, 50% of whom were members of the club. Dominic was well versed in his topic and spoke for almost 90 minutes. He probably could have continued for several hours. (LEFT - John Murphy and Jean Conrad pose with Dominic at the Lincoln statue on the square in Gettysburg.) During his visit to Gettysburg he was treated to a number of activities. Details of the weekend can be see in the attached documents. Gettysburg Hospitality      Hesburgh Lecture Report

"TENDER, STRONG, AND TRUE" BROUGHT IN-HOUSE!  LEFT - Club members listen as the DVD "Discovering Your Mission: Living with God-Given Purpose" plays during the January 18th session at the Hampton Inn in Hanover. Kathy Sullivan, Spiritual Director for the Notre Dame Alumni Association, asked club leadership to sponsor one of her Tender, Strong, and True presentations by using a DVD developed from the original live program. Twenty three members attended the session and everyone was pleased with the program. We were especially honored to have Mike McCoy, Notre Dame All American and eleven year NFL Veteran as part of our program for that evening. Mike watched the video, took notes, and then provided insights into his decision to dedicate his life to helping young students make good decisions. He also used some of his own experiences to highlight key messages in the program. It was an inspiring night!    ND TSandT Presentation 2011

CLUB CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NOTRE DAME "TWIN" CORBY STATUE   Club members, led by John Murphy, conducted a special ceremony at the Corby statue on campus while at the Senate Conference on April 16. Rick Staub, Jennifer Krumrine, Jeanette Miller and our local ND member Tim Dukeman supported John in this event. On the photo (left) you can see John Murphy opening the ceremony by talking about the "link" between Notre Dame and Gettysburg, created through the general absolution offered by Father Corby to the Irish Brigade during the battle of Gettysburg. A detailed description of the event and photos can be seen by clicking on the attached documents. 2011 Corby Ceremony ND Senate     ND Corby 100th Program

MIKE MCCOY SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS 2011 - On January 19 and 20 All American Notre Dame player Mike McCoy visited 5 area catholic schools and gave his presentation "Decisions Determine Destiny" to 975 area students. The Notre Dame Club of Gettysburg sponsored Mike and assisted him as he went from school to school. Mike's eleven years in the NFL provided a platform to get the kid's attention but his real message was about making good decisions during this time of their lives. The kids were really happy to see him and his message on making the right choices about alcohol, drugs, and sex seemed to get through to the students. Mike had the students fill out cards and he made follow-up calls immediately after each session.   He also participated in a showing of one of the "Tender, Strong, and True" DVDs at an evening session on Tuesday evening. Twenty three members took advantage of this event. Mike McCoy Presentations     ND TSandT Presentation

ROAD CREW COMPLETES 4 CLEANUPS IN 2011! Our road crew completed our 4 day schedule for 2011. Our assigned road was the stretch of route 116 from McSherrystown to the Littlestown cutoff. This project has been a really great one for the club as it provides an opportunity for us to work together for a common cause. Meetings and events are nice but this project and others like our bingos bring the team together and build solid teamwork. Thanks for your support for this project! Dates completed in 2011 were: March 19, May 14, August 20, and October 1. The following dates have been established for 2012 - March 31, May 26, July 21, and October 27. Please plan on being part of the Irish Road Crew during the new year!     Road Project 100111
 Bingo!
"BIG" BINGO SCORES "BIG" IN 2011!  The club's Big Bingo project for this year completed on March 19th. Once again, Rick Staub and Linda Masenheimer led the way as our club made a profit of $5,557, with our partner Delone Catholic Athletic Association making the same amount. The support from club members was outstanding at all three events. This project is our major fund-raiser and allows us to continue the aggressive annual program set by the Board of Directors. The club's annual  dues of $25 pays for only administrative costs. The club has a goal of providing $6,000 a year to increase our endowed scholarship fund at Notre Dame as well as multiple projects in each of the 6C areas. The Big Bingo project in 2011 provided funds for much of our program.  Big Bingo Event  012211

  A PAST CLUB ACCOMPLISHMENT!
 FATHER CORBY RESTORED!
FATHER CORBY RESTORATION  In late 2009 the club received word from Chuck Loving at the Snite Museum that our effort to get the Corby statue restored was completed. The club initiated the project, lobbied for funds, and contributed $2,000 to accomplish this goal. We were extremely grateful to Chuck for the role he played in this project. When we approached him he jumped in and provided some key action items needed to make this happen. Through follow-up of his suggestions we were able to accomplish a goal we established when the club was founded - to keep the legacy of Father William Corby in front of Domers and the general public. As you will see if you click on the link below the statue on campus was in bad shape. ND Gettysburg is proud to say that Father Corby is standing a bit taller on the campus of Notre Dame today.        Corby Restoration
