Community Service

Putting the Notre Dame spirit into action in the local community is another important function of Notre Dame clubs around the world. The possibilities for serving others are almost endless, from simply adding a food drive (or other creative donation drive) to another event or getting involved with ND's programs such as the Tax Assistance Program (TAP), Breast Cancer or Prostate Cancer Awareness Programs, or the Call-To-Protect Program. Local programs such as a service project, education project, or other types of community outreach projects are also important parts of the Community Service portfolio.

NOTRE DAME CLUB OF GETTYSBURG PROJECTS

(Projects will be updated for 2010 as they occur.)

CLUB ASSISTS BLUE STAR MOTHERS!  On Saturday, August 21st ten members of the club met with members of the Blue Star Mothers from Hanover and boxed 106 items for shipment to service men and women in Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. Included were sweat shirts and pants, lounging pants, underwear, T-shirts and socks. BINGO EARNS DOLLARS FOR CLUB AND DELONE CATHOLIC!    Rick Staub calls numbers and gazes out a a near capacity crowd at the first of three bingo sessions for 2010. Our club partnered with the Athletic Association of Delone Catholic for this project. At the end of the last bingo both organizations had realized a profit of almost $6,000. This far exceeded our expectations. Just as important was the membership support of this project as twenty eight (28) to thirty six (36) members helped each night. Co-chairing the project with Rick was his sister, Linda Masenheimer. The Staub family certainly demonstrated that leadership runs in the family as the planning and implementation of the project was outstanding. Thanks also to all who helped!   Event Report

NURSING HOME ENTERTAINMENT  - As Father Hesburgh said in his letter to the clubs, "One of my great areas of Notre Dame pride is the fact that so many of our clubs are now involved in service projects which do all sorts of wonderful things such as: feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, taking in the sick, giving drink to the thirsty, and visiting those who are outcast to society." It was that last item that caught the club's attention when we initially started our Community Program in 2004. Most nursing homes can be depressing and residents need events that will make their days more enjoyable. Four times each year club members go to the Golden Living Center at 741 Chambersburg Road in Gettysburg where they provide an entertainment hour for the residents. This year will be our fifth consecutive year for this program. The club hires a musician who plays the piano and the accordion. The club also utilizes a specific theme wherever possible - programs in March have a distinct Irish flavor with all kinds of songs in honor of St. Patrick's Day, in December the sing-a-long features all Christmas music and ends with "Here Comes Santa Claus" as the jolly old man enters the room.  Event Bulletin   Club members always leave the facility feeling pretty good about themselves. Our first 2010 event was conducted on March 24th. Event Bulletin  The event on May 23rd will be really special, as it will be dedicated to Father Ted for the Hesburgh Month of Service. Also, the uniform of the day for this one will be "The Shirt". Event Bulletin   The club will also provide entertainment on August 4th and December 19th.

"BAT FOR THE CURE" PROJECT - Club members supported the Senior Alumni project at the Frederick Keys Minor League baseball game on August 28th in 2009. In spite of terrible weather six members staffed the "Bat" table, handing out Prostate Cancer information throughout the night. While it rained heavily all around the stadium, the game was not interupted. Pictured at left is Jeanette Miller and Wilma Noel stepping into the arriving crowd to give out information to the adults and wrist bands to the children. The materials that were not used at this game will be on display and available for members at other club functions.  Event Bulletin   In 2010 the club is committed to do two games. The first date will be on August 7th at a York Revolution game. The second date will be for a game for the Frederick Keys but it has not been scheduled yet. For information on this project call Duke Clabaugh on (717) 432-9765 or via email at clabaugh81@comcast.net.

IRISH FESTIVAL - The club once again participated in the Annual Irish Festival in Gettysburg in 2009. This was our 5th year at the festival, which took place at Moose Park in Gettysburg. Randy Noel was the chairman of this year's project and he had no problem getting the volunteers needed to staff the booth, where raffle tickets and club merchandise was sold.Randy also was able to get a new member during the festivities. This event is always a great opportunity for members to get to know each other in a setting designed for socializing.  Event Bulletin  The club has committed to participate in the Festival in 2010. The date is Saturday, July 17th. For information call Randy Noel on (717) 637-7931.

CALL-TO-PROTECT  - Over the last 4 years the club has collected over 450 old cell phones and sent them to a site in Michigan. They are refurbished and reprogramed for use by abuse victims. Members can bring old phones to any ND Gettysburg project or contact Bob Krumrine at rkrumrine@rhsheppard.com or via phone at (717) 637-6820.  Phones from this location are also sent to service men and women overseas. Points in the Volunteer/Participation program are awarded for donations to this program. See the Football Ticket Policy under Club Documents for guidelines.   Program Bulletin

FOOD FOR THE POOR   - Members can donate food at all game watches or bring items to any board meeting. Items collected will be put into boxes and given to God's Meal Barrel in Hanover, PA. For 2009 club members donated 749 cans of food and a $50 check. This is twice the amount of food we donated in 2008. We are presently providing food at a level that will break the 2009 record. Members can also give cash donations on behalf of the club. Members should bring unperishable food items to all game watches or contact Bob Krumrine at rkrumrine@rhsheppard.com or via phone at (717) 637-6820. Program Bulletin

ADOPT-A-ROAD  - The first Adopt-A-Road Project was held on Saturday, April 4, 2009. Team members and friends walked the 2 mile stretch of road to clean the area of trash. They collected 39 bags of trash in 2 1/2 hours. Three other events to finish the year took place on June 13th, September 19th, and October 31st.  Our first clean up for 2010 took place on March 20th and the second on May 15th. Other dates for this year are: August 21st and October 16th. Start time for these dates is 9:00 AM. Meeting location is always the Food Lion parking lot at the South end of McSherrystown on route 116. Members who participate on this project will earn 2 points per event.
