The Catholic tradition is one of the most special and distinctive characteristics of Notre Dame. One of the most meaningful things a club can offer is the opportunity for alumni and friends to worship together through an event such as a communion breakfast, family mass, or alumni retreat.
NOTRE DAME CLUB OF GETTYSBURG PROJECTS
(Projects will be updated for 2010 as they occur.)
Father Corby Field Mass - In late June the club conducts a field mass on the Gettysburg battlefield at the site where Father William Corby gave general absolution to the Irish Brigade. In 2010 this Mass took place on 6/26 at 10:00am, with approximately 55 people in attendance. Father Larry Sherdel and Monsignor Marty Feild celebrated the Mass. Prior to the Mass John Murphy provided the history of Father William Corby and then led the opening hymn. At the conclusion of the Mass there was an additional ceremony where Major Tim Dukeman planted 2 flags in front of the monument - the US flag and the Irish Brigade flag. John then ended the event by playing TAPS. As usual, the UND Celebration took place following the Mass. For details of the 2010 event click on the following links. Mass Luncheon 6C Event!
Club Masses - Each year the club sponsors four Masses - the Corby Field Mass (mentioned above), a Lenten Mass, an Advent Mass, and a Mass for our Student Send-off event. The 2010 Lenten Mass took place on March 27th (see details below). The Student Sendoff Mass is scheduled for August 14th and the Advent Mass for December 11th.
At most of our Masses we are fortunate to have "Father Mike" Reid, ND graduate, celebrate the event with us. In some cases we also include other celebrants, such as Father Monk Malloy when he visited for the 2008 UND Celebration.
Lenten Retreat - On March 27th the club conducted a Lenten Retreat at Gettysburg College. William Coolinge, a Theologian from Mount Saint Mary's University provided a lecture on Catholic Social Justice from 10:00am to noon. Following a Mass in Christ Chapel on the campus, a luncheon was held at the PIKE Restaurant. Twelve (12) members attended these events. Father Michael Reid, our club chaplain and ND graduate, celebrated the mass for the club. All three events were coordinated by Alan Perry, our Faith Activities Director, who did his usual great job.
